In this book I argue that contemporary young adult novels depict readers as doers, and that the ability to read deeply, critically, and communally is crucial to the development of adolescent agency.<\/p>\n<p>Although my training is strictly academic, I often write for a broader audience as well. I publish <a href=\"https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/gruner\/?page_id=8\">academic articles<\/a>&#8211;mostly on children&#8217;s, YA, and Victorian literature&#8211;and <a title=\"Journalism and Creative Nonfiction\" href=\"https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/gruner\/?page_id=9\">journalism and creative nonfiction<\/a>, much of it related to motherhood and\/or children&#8217;s literature.
