To cap off Well-Being Week and usher in Fall Break, we asked faculty members to share their favorite guaranteed-to-make-you-cry movies. Why tearjerkers? Because, as it turns out, crying can greatly benefit your emotional health<\/a> and well-being<\/a>. If you find yourself with a few free hours over Fall Break \u2013 and we certainly hope you do! \u2013 feel free to check out the following recommendations. Remember that the\u00a0University of Richmond provides access to Kanopy<\/a>, where you may be able to watch some of these films without need of a streaming platform subscription.<\/p>\n Tara Casey<\/p>\n Not a movie but a book recommendation to kick things off! Prof. Casey recommends The Year of Magical Thinking<\/em>, by Joan Didion. \u201cIt is not that long of a read,\u201d Prof. Casey says, and it\u2019s one that can help you \u201ctruly connect[] with [your] core on all the emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n Janice Craft<\/p>\n Prof. Craft recommends Moonlight<\/em> and In Her Shoes<\/em> for a good cry. \u201cThese films are very different, but both depict complex and at times heartbreaking relationships. Plus, In Her Shoes<\/em> delivers bonus e.e. cummings content.\u201d<\/p>\n Rebecca Crootof<\/p>\n Prof. Crootof recommends Coco<\/em>, \u201c[b]ecause obviously. The scene where Miguel sings to Mama Coco gets me every time.\u201d<\/p>\n Ashley Dobbs<\/p>\n Prof. Dobbs offers The Pianist<\/em> for anyone brave enough to turn into a sobbing mess. \u201cIt is biographical, it is during the Holocaust, [and] it is brutal.\u201d She recommends checking out Michael Wilmington\u2019s review in the Chicago Tribune and Richard Schickel\u2019s piece in Time for more information about the film.<\/p>\n Hayes Holderness<\/p>\n Prof. Holderness recommends The Diving Bell and the Butterfly<\/em>, a movie he happened upon by chance one day at a small theatre. He says it\u2019s nothing short of \u201can emotional rollercoaster to experience Jean-Do come to terms with his condition and his relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n Alex Clay Hutchings<\/p>\n Prof. Hutchings offers a variety of tearful options. First, the Disney movie The Fox and the Hound<\/em>. Says Prof. Hutchings, \u201cit is one of the saddest endings of all time.\u201d Next, Schindler\u2019s List<\/em>, \u201ca tragic classic.\u201d Third, The Notebook<\/em>; anyone who\u2019s seen this film will agree it is \u201creally sad at the end.\u201d Finally, for a \u201chappy\u201d tearjerker, check out Homeward Bound<\/em>.<\/p>\n Molly Lentz-Meyer<\/p>\n In the mood for a tragic teen romance movie? Prof. Lentz-Meyer assures us that Now Is Good<\/em> is \u201cheartbreaking and brilliant,\u201d and a \u201cnever fail[]\u201d option for a heartrending cry. Set in London, with a cast that includes Dakota Fanning, Paddy Considine, and Olivia Williams, it\u2019s \u201cone of the saddest movies I\u2019ve ever watched (so many times).\u201d<\/p>\n Andy Spalding<\/p>\n
