Sure, the pandemic has been staggeringly stressful, but it has provided more than a few chuckles as we wrestle with our new work-from-home tech. Here are just a few examples of\u00a0<em>law + Zoom = disaster.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ultra-viral\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KxlPGPupdd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;lawyer cat&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0tops this list. Texas attorney Rod Ponton zoomed into a civil forfeiture hearing as usual, except for one tiny detail\u2014he was unaware that his kids had set up a kitten Zoom filter. Watch in mortifying horror as Ponton-the-Cat struggles to remove the filter before a very unimpressed judge, imploring that he, indeed, is &#8220;NOT a cat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Next in the cavalcade of legal cringe is the Florida man (<em>of course<\/em>) who showed up to his virtual divorce hearing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lawhaha.com\/covid-zoom-court-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shirtless and in a bathing suit.<\/a>\u00a0In an email response to this guy&#8217;s very contrite lawyer, the judge in the case said, &#8220;I am aware that some clients, especially those under stress in family law cases, simply do not hear or register the instructions. Of course, given Mr. [deleted]\u2019s attire (swim trunks, bare chest, and \u2013 I can\u2019t remember which \u2013 either flip flops or bare feet) and location (beach), I\u2019m not sure I would classify him as terribly stressed\u2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not just clients who have abandoned formal attire (or any attire) in Florida. Judge Dennis Bailey of the 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida issued<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/15\/us\/coronavirus-lawyers-court-telecommute-dress-code.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0an open letter<\/a>\u00a0to attorneys appearing before his bench with a simple message\u2014<em>dress appropriately!<\/em>\u00a0\u201cOne male lawyer appeared shirtless and one female attorney appeared still in bed, still under the covers,\u201d he wrote. \u201cAnd putting on a beach cover-up won\u2019t cover up you\u2019re poolside in a bathing suit. So, please, if you don\u2019t mind, let\u2019s treat court hearings as court hearings, whether Zooming or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multiple facepalms achieved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the brave new world of the Zoom Courtroom!
