Of their fourteen operas, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycat.richmond.edu\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?&#038;bibId=650136\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Mikado<\/a><\/em> is one of the most often performed.  <em>The Mikado<\/em> is a love story, a political satire critiquing the British politics of the day, and like all of Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s operas, it\u2019s a comedy.  <\/p>\n<p>The problem? <em><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycat.richmond.edu\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?&#038;bibId=650136\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Mikado<\/a><\/em> is set in a highly fictionalized version of Japan, a culture which at the time <strong>[Editor&#8217;s note: <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gmo\/9781561592630.article.O006344\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Mikado<\/em> was first produced in London in 1885<\/a>]<\/strong> was not well understood by the British public.  Traditional performances use costuming, makeup and stage presence in ways that today can be considered stereotyping and offensive, not to mention the fact that often, the singers performing in the opera are not of Asian descent. In the century following its original production, more and more attention fell on the problematic aspects of the opera.  <\/p>\n<p>This year, the music department at the University of Richmond is presenting the <a href=\"https:\/\/as.richmond.edu\/tucker-boatwright\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tucker-Boatwright Festival<\/a> in collaboration with Boatwright Library, which this year focuses on the representation of the \u201cother\u201d in music and the arts at large, titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/as.richmond.edu\/tucker-boatwright\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beyond Exoticism<\/a>&#8220;.  An advertising poster for a course tied to the festival included this photo of a production of <em>The Mikado<\/em>, and the headline \u201cso, what do we think of this?\u201d <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1994\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1994\" src=\"https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/seattle-times-mikado-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/parsons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/seattle-times-mikado-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/parsons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/seattle-times-mikado-408x300.jpg 408w, https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/parsons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/seattle-times-mikado.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/opinion\/the-yellowface-of-ldquothe-mikadordquo-in-your-face\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The photo above comes from the Seattle Times\u2019 scathing review of a local production of <em>The Mikado<\/em> in 2014. <\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the years, a number of productions have attempted in different ways to approach the show in a different light to remove the problematic aspects. <a href=\"https:\/\/nygasp.org\/mikadotour\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One New York production, for example, created a new prologue which suggests that the whole show occurs in the mind of a Victorian British person suffering the hallucinogenic effects of a head injury<\/a>.  Other productions have changed the setting, for example, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americantheatre.org\/2016\/04\/20\/building-a-better-mikado-minus-the-yellowface\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Renaissance-Era Milan<\/a>, or to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1986\/10\/12\/arts\/jonathan-miller-s-mikado-owes-a-lot-to-the-marx-brothers.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 1930s-Era British hotel<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/idle-mikado.jpg\" alt=\"1930s set Mikado\" width=\"244\" height=\"445\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/parsons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/idle-mikado.jpg 244w, https:\/\/create.richmond.edu\/parsons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/idle-mikado-164x300.jpg 164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycat.richmond.edu\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?&#038;bibId=650136\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Mikado<\/a><\/em> raises a lot of tough questions about the proper place for historical musical and artistic works which today can be viewed as highly problematic or even offensive.  I couldn\u2019t possibly claim to have any of the answers.
