I heard that word more in the U.K., where summer twilight can be prolonged and magical. It&#8217;s a artful word, gloaming, and I almost can spot Robert Burns on some heather-covered hillside, journal in hand, writing a few lines of verse:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The hunter lo&#8217;es the morning sun;<br \/>\nTo rouse the mountain deer, my jo;<br \/>\nAt noon the fisher seeks the glen<br \/>\nAdown the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/281.html\">burn<\/a>\u00a0to steer, my jo:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/769.html\">Gie<\/a>\u00a0me the hour\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1208.html\">o&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0gloamin&#8217; grey,<br \/>\nIt maks my heart\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/1371.html\">sae<\/a>\u00a0cheery O,<br \/>\nTo meet thee on the lea-rig,<br \/>\nMy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertburns.org\/works\/glossary\/26.html\">ain<\/a>\u00a0kind Dearie O.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Burns reminds us that the gloaming is not necessarily ruddy or wonderful. Gloaming comes from the Old English\u00a0<em>gl\u00f3m<\/em><em>,\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 or twilight. See the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/79013?rskey=zebXfB&amp;result=2#eid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OED Online<\/a>\u00a0for more on this origin. Our word thus may have crossed from the Continent with Germanic peoples, invading the British Isles after Rome&#8217;s Empire in the West fell.<\/p>\n<p>I hope my Scottish friends do not come over and run me through with a Claymore.\u00a0 In their defense, I have seen my best late-day gloamings and sunsets in Scotland, though more than a few right at home rival their intensity, if not duration.
