Arachnophonia: Frank Ocean “Channel Orange”

Editor’s note: Arachnophonia (“Arachno” = spider / “-phonia” = sound) is a regular feature on our blog where members of the UR community can share their thoughts about resources from the Parsons Music Library‘s collection.

All links included in these posts will take you to either the library catalog record for the item in question or to additional relevant information from around the web.

Today’s installment of Arachnophonia is by student assistant Chiara (class of 2027) and features Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange album on CD. Thanks, Chiara!

Frank Ocean - Channel Orange

The item I chose from the Music Library collection is the CD Channel Orange by Frank Ocean. I chose this album because it is one of my favorite albums to listen to when I want something calm and mellow playing in the background. Some of my favorite songs from the album are “Pink Matter,” “Bad Religion,” “Pyramids,” and “Lost.” I often play these songs in the car when I just want calm vibes, or in my room while I am doing homework, cleaning, or simply relaxing. These songs have a smooth, almost dreamy feeling that makes it easy to just drift into a mellow mood and enjoy the moment without thinking too hard about anything else.

I also really like the overall sound and feeling of Channel Orange. Even though the songs tell different stories and explore different topics, the album still has a consistent laid-back feeling that makes it easy to listen to from beginning to end. Frank Ocean‘s storytelling is also one of the things that makes the album stand out to me. His music can be relaxing while still having lyrics that make you think about love, relationships, identity, and different life experiences. For me, Channel Orange is an album that fits a lot of different moods, but I often associate it with creating a calm environment and just vibing.
