Arachnophonia: “It Had To Be You”

Editor’s note: Arachnophonia (“Arachno” = spider / “-phonia” = sound) is a regular feature on our blog where members of the UR community can share their thoughts about resources from the Parsons Music Library‘s collection.

All links included in these posts will take you to either the library catalog record for the item in question or to additional relevant information from around the web.

Today’s installment of Arachnophonia is by student manager Julie (class of 2028) and features a vinyl collection of popular music played on piano from around the Prohibition era of the 20th century. Thanks, Julie!

It Had to be You: Popular Keyboard from the Days of the Speakeasy to the Television Era is a cozy, charming, and thoughtfully-curated collection of piano renditions of popular music from the Prohibition Era. The dreamy atmosphere of the recordings transports the listener back to the Roaring Twenties where the pianist was always the life of the party. The most favored speakeasy pianists played popular music of the time as it was written and without much theatrical flair to emphasize the melody for the benefit of the customers. As a result of those preferences, the music is easily recognizable and creates the perfect ambiance for cooking, crafting, homework, or, of course, hosting!

My personal favorite tracks are “Kitten on the Keys” by Zez Confrey, a fast-paced ragtime composition; “Aquellos Ojos Verdes” by Nilo Menendez, a Cuban song with a mellow Latin rhythm; and a jazzy rendition of “La Vie En Rose” by Louiguy and Edith Piaf, which is a lovely version of the well-known tune. Each of these piano covers blends seamlessly into the next, leaving the listener wanting nothing more than to spend an evening chatting and dancing away.

Parsons Playlists: French-y? Music

Welcome back to Parsons Playlists! Today’s playlist is curated by Music Library student assistant Isaac (class of 2025), which features some music with a French feel.

French-y? Music

I just watched possibly the scariest movie I’ve seen in a long time, Talk To Me, but unlike my eyes, my ears were quite happy with what they were receiving. “Le Monde” was a terrific original piece for a terrifying original picture, so here are some songs that also sounded a bit ‘Parisian’ to me.

Richard Carter – “Le Monde”

Edith Piaf – “La Foule”

France Gall – “N’écoute pas les idoles”

Antonio Muréna – “Melancolie”

Zan – “Yasmeen”

Nicholas Britell – “Roman’s Beat – Hearts”

Madlib Invazion – “Movie Finale”

Music for France

In light of the terrible events in Paris, France this past Friday, we at the Parsons Music Library have decided to share some music selections in solidarity with the people of France (and the victims of violence all over the world).

Many people have found ways to pay musical tribute to Paris, here are just a couple of lovely examples:

A man traveled to the Bataclan to play John Lennon’s “Imagine” near the site of one of the attacks. Read more from a Rolling Stone article here: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/watch-pianist-perform-john-lennons-imagine-outside-paris-bataclan-20151114

The Metropolitan Opera in New York City paid tribute on Saturday with a rendition of the French National Anthem “La Marseilles”. Here’s a New York Times blog post with more info: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/11/14/at-metropolitan-opera-support-for-paris-sounds-out-with-singing-of-frances-national-anthem/?_r=0
